Teaser Tuesday

:::blows off cobwebs from blog:::

Shh… I know it’s been a long time, but you’ll see  - it’s just like riding a bike. You’ll remember how to do it. Trust me.

Because I’ve finished my manuscript and I’m chewing my hands off while waiting for NaNoWriMo to start the new project, I figured I would put a little somethin’ somethin’ on the blog. So, here’s a taste of LONDON’S CALLING. ~~~

Dante lifted his eyelids only enough to see Sebastian holding a wet towel over his head, dripping its cold contents onto him. “What is this nonsense?” he growled, putting his arm over his face.

“Ye’ve been asleep for three days, Dante.”

“What do you mean, three days?” Dante bolted up, then laid back down as the room began to spin in his dizziness, and his stomach churned.

“I mean you were downstairs having tea and then … slam… you were unconscious. I assume you had a concussion from your injuries that you didn’t take care of.” Sebastian pointed to his head.

Dante tenderly touched his forehead. It wasn’t as painful as it was before. “It’s healed some.”

“Yes, three days gone, now. You look practically human.”

Dante touched his ribs. They were still sore to the touch, but not as bad as before. Unfortunate that he had to take a three-day nap, but apparently, it was worth it in the long run. He’d healed without bearing the brunt of it.

“You did have a fever for a moment or two. I came to talk to you but we couldn’t rouse you enough to speak coherently. Just some rabble about some bird and a ring of fire. I couldn’t make out any of it.” Sebastian shrugged and put the towel down on the nightstand beside Dante’s bed.

“Bird and a ring of fire?” That didn’t make any sense. He tried to recall what would make him dream or think that, but nothing came.

Dante sat up a little slower this time. The room stayed still. He glanced around the small dusty room to try and trigger any memory of what happened. He sighed, the thoughts not returning. “What happened, Seb?”

Sebastian sat on the chair beside the bed. “You were mugged outside Miss Merriweather’s. Someone found you wandering around, dazed, outside, and brought you here in a carriage. I watched out for you from as far away as possible. I didn’t want anyone to think I was trying to steal from you. You know how your family is about me. I showed up the next day, don’t you remember?”

“No, I don’t remember much at all,” Dante answered, concerned.

Sebastian chuckled, standing up to walk toward the small desk in the corner of the room. He flipped it open and pulled out two shot glasses and a decanter filled of dark amber liquid.

“You want a drink, mate?” He offered, pouring a glass for himself.

“Just water, please.” Dante propped the pillows up on his bed and reclined again, with his arms tucked behind his head. He tried to remember that night. Only flashes of red feathers and fire entered his mind. Then the coppery memory of blood returned. He licked his lips, recalling being beaten in the face. “It doesn’t make any sense. Sebastian, what did we see at Miss Merriweather’s?”

He returned to the chair beside Dante and handed him a glass of water. “We were drinking your father a farewell. And seeing some sights, I suppose.”

“Stop being cryptic. I don’t remember what we were doing.” Dante took the water and took a sip, not trusting Sebastian not to put vodka in it instead. Tasting the untainted cold water, he drained the contents as if he’d never experienced it before. He stood, steadied himself for a moment, then walked to the desk himself and poured another glass. He walked back to the edge of the bed and sat facing Sebastian.

“We saw a burlesque show. A very nice one at that. You couldn’t take your eyes off one woman.” Sebastian laughed. “Then again, she gave us a right nice little side show,” he said and laughed harder, putting his hands on his chest in bawdy gesture.

The memory flooded back in a flash so harsh, Dante sprayed Sebastian with the water.

“Delilah!” he all but shouted and then grabbed his head with the pain it caused from the noise.

“Yes, that was her name. Delilah Knightly. Do you remember now? She also managed to get herself arrested. Remember that? And the part where I came to your house and showed you the bloody newspaper? Yeah. That too. You passed out… So forgive me for not divulging too much information at once in fear your sensibilities will be compromised again by a bit of a tart. Smallish tits, too, if I remember correctly.” Sebastian took a drink, but didn’t finish, as Dante swung a fist and smashed it out of his hand.

“Get out, Sebastian.”

Sebastian jumped up, wiping the booze from his shirt with his hands. “What the bloody hell was that for?”

“It was for being a hoodlum, Seb. She’s a lady and that’s final.”

“A Lady? Are you joking?” he bellowed. “She’s a feathered fan and a handful of sequins away from a prostitute.” Sebastian dodged another swing from Dante and jumped over the edge of the bed toward the door. “You’ve lost your mind, Heller. Send me a message when that lump on your brain has gone away. You’re acting like a lunatic.”

Dante threw his glass at the door as it slammed behind his friend and watched it shatter to pieces. He stood in the room, his heart pounding. Why did he have that reaction? Why would something like that infuriate him so? Ms. Knightly was far from his ward or wife. She was a random person who’d been kind enough to offer him a hand up and a handkerchief. Yet his heart pounded in his chest as if he were willing to dodge a bullet for her, or worse.

A Different Graduation

   Posted by: Elysabeth Williams   in Uncategorized

Eight Years ago I was preparing to be a mother. I didn’t plan on being a stay at home mom but it did work out where it was cheaper for me to stay home. Five years passed and my oldest daughter went to PreK. A few tears were shed, but I had a new little one at home to take care of. It kept me occupied.

Today, my youngest started PreK. The oldest started 2nd grade.

For the first time in 8 years, I’m home alone in the day time. No chasing kids, changing diapers, fixing lunches, watching pbs kids on autopilot. I can watch whatever crap on tv I want. I can go hang out at Starbucks for hours (like this morning!) I’ve graduated, in a sense – from stay at home mom-dom. Of course I’m involved in both schools, and have volunteered to be Room Mom for half pints’ class. (What the hell was I thinking?)

I can finally write full time. I can have some “me” time. I’ve been smiling a secret smile for this day and now that it’s here…

The house seems a little emptier today. A little quieter, in a sad way.

I said I wasn’t going to mourn my youngest going to school. She’s excited to be there and I’m excited for the new adventures and the friends she’ll make. It’s a new chapter in our lives.

But I’m sitting here, a little misty eyed against my own will – at my own personal graduation.

I’ve survived two infants, toddlers, and now…

What the heck am I doing? Work in Progress. No really

   Posted by: Elysabeth Williams   in Uncategorized

The summer is long. Swamp-Ass season is in full force. I’m currently longing for sweaters and blue jeans weather. I envy the people on the upper west coast area. Yeah, Portland, I’m looking at you.

The kids are tanned nicely and I’m freckled. I had a touch of surgery this spring and finally up and moving at 100%!

This fall means a great deal for up and coming work for me. I’m finishing up a manuscript, a follow up to The Electrifying Exploits of the English Three, entitled (very shortly) London’s Calling.

~~

Delilah Knightly, a burlesque dancer at London’s exclusive Miss Merriweather’s, is abruptly fired from her position as the club’s headliner after her costume falls apart twenty feet above the stage. Her former boss is murdered minutes after she packs her trunk and flounces out, and Delilah’s only alibi, a handsome stranger she fell over in an alleyway, has vanished.

When she returns to Miss Merriweather’s to try and speak with club’s owner, Delilah is hauled away by the police to await trial. Confused and hopeless, Delilah can only sit in her dingy cell until the owner of Merriweather’s, Jillian Johnsworth, and her two extraordinary companions vouch to keep her under their watchful eye until trial.

Taken to Ms. Johnsworth’s estate outside London until the real murderer can be flushed out, Delilah is introduced to peculiar workings outside proper London Society’s strict protocols. The rules are lax, there seem to be secrets the women keep, and Delilah is determined to figure them out. The group of women and their male counterparts show her a life she could she never would have experienced elsewhere; full of adventure, love, laughter, and something Delilah has never truly dared hope for: family.

Now if they can only find that pesky missing stranger with the stark grey eyes, all just might fit into place.

~~~
Dante Heller, a newly named Earl, doesn’t want to go to Miss Merriweather’s with his shady–but relatively loyal–friend, Sebastian. He wants to stay home with a book, scotch in hand, and grieve his father’s death. But when he relents, he’s so taken with the sight of the red-feathered acrobat above the stage, he barely glances down when her costume top lands on Lord Reddington’s bald pate. Once capable of breaking his eye contact with the captivating Delilah Knightly, he’s so unsettled he leaves before the curtain even closes.
Someone punching him in the face in an alley outside cuts the already interesting night short. Curiously, Delilah the dancer comes to his aid as he wonders who exactly is responsible for the black and blue shiner and splitting headache. The beautiful young dancer whisks off into the night and out of his life as quickly as she entered.
He wakes to news that dear Delilah is wanted for murder. Each attempt to reach the police and provide Miss Knightly an alibi is thwarted by a spectacular array of horrific science experiments and encounters with a group of complete madmen called The Jade Order.
And all Dante wants is to clear the name of the lovely Delilah Knightly. If he can only stay alive long enough to find her.
Stay tuned…
RoundCon !
   Posted by: Elysabeth Williams   in Uncategorized
I believe it’s taken me this long to recover from Round Con. I came home and passed out and it’s taken until today to feel human again. But it was worth every minute.
I arrived without expectations, simply because this was my first convention as an author. I’ve been to other conventions but to party. Honestly, I vaguely remember going to other conventions.
Round Con had a decent turn out even though it competing with at least a half dozen other conventions in the southeast. It was on the small side, but for me, it turned out to be a great event. It gave me time to actually talk to readers, other writers and make connections I wouldn’t have otherwise. I met five great people who I hope to meet again later!
Here’s a bit about the writers I shared time with:
Misty Massey is the author of Mad Kestrel, a rollicking adventure of magic on the high seas from Tor Books. She has short stories in the recent anthologies Rum and Runestones and Dragon’s Lure. When she’s not writing, Misty studies Middle Eastern dance and is a member of the Beledi Beat dance troupe. Kestrel’s Dance, the second volume of Kestrel’s exploits, is in production, and Misty is currently working on a Weird Western novel. Misty is one of the featured writers on the Magical Words blog (magicalwords.net).
Faith Hunter, fantasy writer, was born in Louisiana and raised all over the south. Her Rogue Mage novels, a dark, urban fantasy series-Bloodring, Seraphs, and Host-feature Thorn St. Croix, a stone mage in a post-apocalyptic, alternate reality, urban fantasy world. These novels are the basis for the role playing game, ROGUE MAGE. The Skinwalker series, featuring Jane Yellowrock is taking off like a rocket with Skinwalker, Blood Cross, and Mercy Blade. Under her pen name Gwen Hunter, she writes action adventure, mysteries, and thrillers, and is tweaking a screenplay with a co-writer. As Faith and Gwen, she has 21 books in print in 26 countries.
John G. Hartness is a recovering theatre geek who likes loud music, fried pickles and cold beer. He’s been published or accepted online in several journals including The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature, cc&d, Deuce Coupe and Truckin’. He can be found online atwww.johnhartness.com and spends too much time on Twitter, especially after a few drinks. His first novel, The Chosen, is an urban fantasy about saving the world, snotty archangels, gambling, tattooed street preachers, immortals with family issues, bar brawls and the consequences of our decisions. He followed up The Chosen with Hard Day’s Knight, a new twist on the vampire detective novel and the first in a planned series of five books. John has been called “the Kevin Smith of Charlotte,” and fans of Joss Whedon and Jim Butcher should enjoy his snarky slant on the fantasy genre. His next novel, Back in Black was released the same weekend as RoundCon!
Kalayna Price is the author of the Alex Craft Novels, a new dark urban fantasy series from Roc, and the author of the Novels of Haven from Bell Bridge Books. She draws her ideas from the world around her, her studies into ancient mythologies, and her obsession with classic folklore. Her stories contain not only the mystical elements of fantasy, but also a dash of romance, a bit of gritty horror, some humor, and a large serving of mystery. She is a member of SFWA and RWA, and an avid hula-hoop dancer who has been known light her hoop on fire. To find out more, please visit her at www.kalayna.com.
Needless to say, my TBR pile has grown immensely.
I sat on four writing panels, which were great. Well, with the exception of the second one about Dystopian/Alternate Realities where I got over caffeinated and lost my ability to speak. Many thanks to Misty, Faith, and Kalayna for pulling me out of my drooling daze and back on track. I know better than to have that 2nd cup of coffee before I try and speak in front of people! I learned a lot as well as spouted gibberish and am mucho thankful to have had the opportunity.
I had a blast, and hope to return!
And last but not least, here’s my favorite picture of the weekend. It was my last sale and it just cracked me up..
…and who else do I make it out to, other than TO SATAN!  LOL
(no red kilt though, which made me sad.)
That’s it!
